Scott Umback died waiting for help. The 42-year-old was in the back of an ambulance parked in his driveway, clutching at his chest, as he suffered a cardiac arrest. But it was an air ambulance that the regional Victorian father needed — his local hospital wasn’t adequately equipped to deal with heart attacks. As paramedics tried desperately to keep him alive while waiting for the plane, his wife and two sons watched on helplessly.
Scott stood up to manoeuvre himself over to the stretcher the paramedics had wheeled in, and laid down. But his condition quickly became life threatening and, just moments later, his heart stopped beating. He died in the back of the ambulance in his front yard. Heart checks The next few months were a blur as the family began to grieve their shock loss. Katrina reached out to the Heart Foundation and began her mission to educate herself — and others — on cardiovascular disease .
