A satellite, out of commission for more than a decade, is currently set to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere within days in an uncontrolled operation. The European Space Agency’s ERS-2 Earth observation satellite was launched on April 21 in 1995, and ceased operations in 2011. The mission to deorbit the satellite and bring it home has continued ever since, and it is currently predicted that the satellite will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere at 6.24am AEDT on Thursday.

” As the satellite comes closer to re-entering Earth’s orbit, the ESA will be able to more accurately predict these details, Tucker said. “About a month ago, the prediction was within a month range,” he said. Will fragments fall to Earth? The satellite will break up as in re-enters Earth’s atmosphere, and “some pieces would be so small it could land in your yard, and you wouldn’t know”, Tucker said.
