Former federal treasurer Peter Costello has resigned as the chairman of Nine Entertainment after days of acrimony following an altercation with a journalist in Canberra Airport.
“The new chair will require full support from all directors as this is an industry where there is fierce rivalry. I do not rate the attacks of a commercial rival.“The threat to this industry comes externally from trillion dollar technology companies that are competing for its business. To stand still or hope to continue to do things as they always have been done is not an option.”
Since joining the board of Nine in 2013, and taking over as chair in 2016, he has been involved in the creation of subscription streaming platform Stan in 2015, a major merger with Fairfax Media in 2018 to add news mastheads includingand a majority interest in property platform Domain, and the full purchase of radio stations like 2GB, 3AW and 4BC in 2019.
