Iconic AFL umpire ‘Razor’ Ray Chamberlain will retire at the end of the season. Chamberlain, 47, reportedly informed his umpire colleagues of the sad news during a training session on Tuesday. He has officiated in more than 380 games, including three grand finals and 31 finals. He was the main man for the dramatic 2010 grand final which ended up being a draw between Collingwood and St Kilda.
He has previously revealed that the nickname somehow started from a cricket match at the MCG, when he took the crease with a Gray Nicolls ‘razor-brand’ cricket bat. But he was unclear how BT caught wind of the story and turned it into a famous nickname. “Over the years I’ve learned to understand that generally speaking, people who make reference to ‘Razor’ I’ve never had the privilege to meet them, they haven’t met me,” he told AFL Media in 2018.
