noted cutie, never shows his face to us in the pilot episode of the highly anticipated Disney+ original series, which launched today. The smooth mask of the Mandalorian armor has captivated viewers for decades, ever since a marginal bounty hunter inmost popular characters. But Boba Fett had the allure of mystery—he speaks just five lines in the original trilogy. His helmet, like his reticence, gives the viewer a blank slate to project upon.
Without a backstory or facial expressions, how do you build an audience rapport with a character? In the pilot, has one idea: General space-Western badassery. Most of the pilot is the Mandalorian showing off his moves in inadvisably risky circumstances—like a Mexican standoff with four stormtroopers at’s office, or taking off in the middle of an ice field while an ice monster is attacking you.
At least the end of the pilot presents, finally, a character-defining moment for the Mandalorian, something that isn’t simply shooting or being shot. Something like emotion comes out of the helmet. It would have been easier, surely, if he’d just taken the helmet off.
