Tarantino jabs back over criticism of Bruce Lee character in OnceUponATimeInHollywood

Quentin Tarantino has broken his silence after family and friends of Bruce Lee blasted the director for the portrayal of the late iconic star inOnce Upon a Time in HollywoodBrad Pitt's character, a stuntman and former war hero named Cliff Booth, laughs in Lee's face over the comment and his behavior, then the two get into a "friendly" contest of who can knock the other down three times without hitting the face.

Tarantino, doing press for the film in Russia, disagreed, saying Lee was actually "kind of an arrogant guy." Tarantino also defended the fight between Moh's Lee and Pitt's Booth, which is stopped before either wins the best of three. Tarantino then offered a deeper look into Pitt's character, who is referred to in the film as a "war hero" but nothing more is stated.

Also, they need to stop profiling the entire Asian community by exploiting faux outrage from a small subset of people. The film was singled out by opportunists wanting to capitalize on faux controversy. Manufacturing backlash by exploiting POC is despicable

Brainwashed bullies are harassing Mike Moh and everybody who loved the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood movie. These people who jumped on a smear bandwagon against a film based on negative spin and an extreme misportrayal need to stop claiming a harmless portrait was offensive

Yes, Tarantino can do what he wanted with his characters. In this case, it’s clear what he wanted to do with Bruce Lee is to put Lee in his place. His portrayal shows what he thinks of Lee. He doesn’t respect or revere him.

'In the United States, I think something of the oriental, I mean the true oriental, should be shown.' -Bruce Lee, 1971 'Bruce Lee was kind of an arrogant guy.' -Quentin Tarantino, 2019

Other American icons are constantly being parodied in fiction. There was an entire show on fox where the founding fathers were portrayed and bumbling idiots. There are no sacred cows in America, get over it.

That was foreshadowing of a kind. That fight demonstrated that cliff had the ability to do stuff that he does later (avoiding spoilers here).

Have people forgotten what good movies are? Movie was garbage!

It is fiction.

All the scene does is establish Cliff as a super hero kaj33 Bruce Lee is a super hero to us millenials at least...

Yea? Well I'm not paying for your opinion Mr. Quentin Tarantino!

Isn't the whole point of this film that Hollywood can create any reality it wants to?

leo94dicaprio I’m Asian. No Asians are defending QuentinTarantino. This reasoning would be similar to saying in a movie, whites got pissed b/c a black fictional character had beat up Prefontaine. But then fans here are saying that’s like Blackpanther beating Prefontaine. Ppl are Weird. 🙄

To me just shows the respect, Bruce Lee still gets all these years later!

Talk about dumb sensitive criticism. It’s fiction!

Then he's an absurd fictional character who couldn't exist in the real world. Like a lot of QT's cartoon creations.

Finally saw the scene and it was even worse than I thought. Everyone in the theater was laughing at the Bruce Lee character like he was a clown.

But i guess them making his ghost sell Johnny Walker was in line with his beliefs.

To his point... it’s fiction!

I find it to be a big hoopla over nothing. The depiction served a purpose within a Hollywood fairytale. His self promoting personality wasn’t any different from Mohamed Ali. Great film!!!

If you’d like to see Bruce lee beat up Cliff then make your own freaking movie and have a turn out like that!

i agree with him 100%!! the dude created a fictional character for god sake!! he can make him beat Thanos if he wants.. and the brainless SJWs made it racist to do what he wants with his characters fucking americans

It's a storytelling film not a documentary ffs

I don’t really get why he portrays Lee like that in the film either, but that said, I’m beginning to get why QT only wants to make one more movie

This whole ridiculous argument is moot if we put Bruce Lee in the Iron Man suit.

Also, what’s wrong with a white guy being better at something? Judging from comments, it seems like y’all are butthurt Tarantino made the best movie of his career and it’s the top grossing original film this year

Old news, and divisive. How many times are you going to post this tired ass article ?

The fact that this needs to be defended is proof we live in South Park MrsGeeLo QTarantino_news

Captain Marvel could do it with a handshake 🤝

lol too bad

Good for him! Film is not a, 'Choose your own adventure'.

Is it time to admit that Tarantino is just not very good? He gets big budgets and great actors - but apart from that...

Alita battle angel could beat Bruce Lee with one punch! Bruce stands no chance!

Have people forgotten what fiction is?

Tarantino is very unpleasant.

Who cares what Tarantino thinks, he was shitting green when Bruce Lee was alive

And?

SurvivorKhoo Awes0me_Grayson 'My hands are registered as lethal weapons'.

What did I miss that was offensive? I’ve seen the movie twice, and still don’t see it.

I hope Hollywood doesn't ruin the image of the late BruceLee, a martialarts hero with integrity.

Thanks for the spoiler alert you didn’t give

With Good Reason, He's An Icon.

How many times we running this story?

And? It’s a dramady!

This was set to be a 1960's era movie. Not to be viewed in a 2019 mindset. Back then, attitudes towards minorities were pretty low. So in making this film, he hit the nail on the head for the era. You'd have had to have lived then to understand...

Not quite an answer! He went between lines avoiding the true! Bruce Lee it might seem at that time arrogant as he was the only one who had aces up his sleeves! His attitude might cost him his life, maybe! But Tarantino put in a nice light just the Americans ! Simple

Y’all just hate a white male being the best at anything huh? 😂

It's like is broken record and the needle just keeps skipping and skipping and skipping and...

Cool shades Admiration all around

Tarantino just had to show a white guy beating an Asian guy. It is just not believable because he’s used Bruce Lee, not a fictional person. He can make the movie he wants and I can choose not to see it.

Good Lord, don't we have bigger problems in this country? Racism, fascism, domestic terrorists? Get over it. It's just a stupid, mediocre movie.

For me that was definitely one of the key flaws of a mostly solid film.

Bruce Lee was a hero of mine growing up. But this is a fictional story about Hollywood. Fiction people. I don’t think the intent was to disrespect Lee and even with the controversy surrounding it, I still don’t think it’s disrespectful. It was funny and exciting to watch. Movies!

It’s a MOVIE! Do they know how it ends?!

You really wanna see the house burning, don't you?

Good for you. Your films are awesome.

Omg, movie was insanely boring zzzzz....

In kungfu we’re taught that whenever someone says something about you (or Bruce Lee), they’re actually talking about themselves. And the arrogance shoe fits, Quent.

Bruce Lee was killed by led poisoning from chalk in his back pain pills, because he refused to pay the Chinese mob a cut of his films made in Hong Kong. These gangsters still hate Bruce Lee, and try to defame him every chance they get. They finance most Hollywood films nowadays.

Give it a rest already.

Let's all remember it's a movie. And the title might give something away too.

There goes the it was a daydream theory

Oh Jezzzz why he is not retired already

The funniest scene in the film. And I love that, predictably, people would cry over it.

I'm offended for Brad Pit.

I mean WTAF? Trick, please.

Forget Bruce Lee, why is nobody talking about the depiction of SAM WANNAMAKER in OnceUponATimeHollywood ?

They should’ve teamed up at the end to defeat the Manson Family.

Wasn't that scene a fantasy taking place in Cliff's mind?

Yeah, I found that bit the most ridiculous. Bruce was on another level and would have beat 'Cliff's' ass.

Yes... it’s called acting and imagination. It’s no different than asking “who would win in a fight, Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt?” BruceLee OnceUponATimeHollywood QuentinTarantino

Booth was a stuntman who was famous for his skill n endurance back in 69. The character could possibly match to the legendary BruceLee. OnceUponATimeHollywood BradPitt StuntMan

He had to explain that? F..off.

coming from him that is joke it sounds like he’s da arrogant 1 2 b so presumptuous bout a person he barely knew its a blanket statement

Yeah if that was his depiction of Bruce Lee it totally false. Don't mistake Cockiness for confidence.

White folks hate seeing anybody of color better than them at anything. Sorry to bust your white fantasy bubble Quentin but nobody was gonna whoop Bruce Lee's ass. NOBODY.

😂

met some annoying foreigners!

StayBeautifulB

It was one of the best scenes in the movie!

do people think this movie is a fucking documentary? anyone offended by that scene is a moron.

Bruce can’t defend himself, so it’s best to just shhh.

And that doesn't make Tarantino arrogant 🤔

And he's an arrogant director...

He’s so disturbing

On this one...take the L.

Problem with Quintin's assertion, there were no Green Berets in World War 2. Kennedy created the Green Berets during his presidency. The First Special Service Force, the precursor to the Green Berets never fought in the Philippines and were disbanded in 1944.

It’s a movie. It’s not a documentary.

Tarantino 🙄

I don't care what the arrogant jerk says, Lee's memory deserved better.

As someone who worships Bruce Lee I'd by lying if I said it didn't bother me a little to see Bruce Lee made fun of but it's just a movie, he's fighting a fictional character, and that whole scene is brilliant. Everybody chill.

He is full...of shit....

Wow the world will now come to an end

Quentin Tarantino Defends ‘Arrogant’ Portrayal of Bruce Lee in ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’Quentin Tarantino responded to criticisms of the “arrogant” portrayal of Bruce Lee in his latest film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” claiming that it isn’t so inaccu… ffs. this scene was a dream sequence from an unreliable narrator. also, the entire movie is a historical reimagining. relax, everybody. Best film of the year Throughout the movie Bruce Lee is treated like an excellent teacher and the highlight of the characters lives. The scene where he gets 'beat up' is really nice, considering its from the POV of a jealous tough guy, and even then bruce lee is practically unscathed
