On Tuesday , the nominations for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards were announced. An annual award show hosted by the cable channel since 1984, the nods revealed that the 2019 event will be the first one to ever feature a category that recognizes talent coming out of the South Korean pop music industry: “Best K-pop.” Blackpink, BTS, EXO, Monsta X, NCT 127, and Tomorrow X Together were each nominated for music videos they released in 2018 and 2019.
A decade ago, K-pop began to rise in global prominence, particularly in the west, but it took until this week for the VMAs to deem K-pop a viable contender. Had this move been made at any time over the past 10 years, closer to when K-pop first began hitting thecharts in the U.S.
