Celebrity chef George Calombaris has rejected claims he deliberately underpaid his staff. The chef and his food empire were ordered to pay almost $8 million to underpaid workers on Thursday. Mr Calombaris has admitted mistakes were made as he grew his empire.
The celebrity chef says he is deeply sorry for what has happened and is reportedly pleading with Australians not to believe he is a 'wage thief'. The investigation concluded 515 current and former employees were owed extra wages from 2011 to 2017. There are now are calls from the Australian Council of Trade Unions for Mr Calombaris to be removed from cooking show MasterChef.

ljayes mattjcan No
ljayes mattjcan Of course his behaviour does not meet public expectations. He is not a role model for up and coming chefs. His standards are well below what they should be.
ljayes mattjcan The issue is that the underpayments are rife in this industry and not corrected unless caught.
ljayes mattjcan Doing more like trying to break unions? You have NFI, do you?
ljayes mattjcan They sure have. They made it harder for businesses to not stuff up paying things like penalty rates by eliminating penalty rates altogether!
ljayes mattjcan Clearly those laws are doing nothing...

Calls for MasterChef to axe George Calombaris over wages scandalWorkers' rights advocates are calling for George Calombaris to be sacked from MasterChef for ripping off workers, while slamming the $200,000 'contrition payment' handed to the celebrity chef as little more than a slap on the wrist. Get rid of him, jail him, then find a new arsehole to fill his shoes. And make him payback that 7.8 million, instead of a 200k slap on the wrist. Should be sacked and have criminal charges laid against him as he actually ‘stole’ that $7.8M from his hard working grossly underpaid employees.
