Prime Minister Scott Morrison has dismissed calls for a boost to the Newstart Allowance as Labor MPs put pressure on the government to make a 'substantial increase'. Some Labor backbenchers argue the payments should be increased by at least $75 a week, though Prime Minister Morrison insists the current levels are adequate. The last boost saw the payments bumped up by $2.
20 in September, taking the payments to $275 a week. New South Wales Labor backbencher Mike Freelander says his party needs to 'show a bit of guts', pushing for an increase to Newstart, with rental assistance, to around $400 per week. The Prime Minister has argued the payments will continue to be adjusted every six months, 'as has always been the practice'.
