A pop-up art project by activists—depicting children in cages, as audio of detained migrant children played—appeared in 24 locations around New York City, many cannily placed in front of media companies, and quickly went viral on Twitter and Instagram before NYPD removed them.
The installation, #NoKidsInCages, is sponsored by RAICES, a Texas nonprofit that handles immigration issues,Each installation features a child-size mannequin cowering and crying under a foil blanket, surrounded by a kennel-size chain link cage., Buzzfeed, Vice, CNN, NBC, Fox News, Newsweek, Refinery29, the Huffington Post and Instagram, in addition to landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge, Columbia University, and Union Square.
The NYPD is dismantling some of the installations, according to Gothamist, with a spokesperson confirming that eight have been removed so far.
