Adelaide froze through its coldest morning in more than 100 years on Wednesday morning, with residents waking up to find frost on their lawn and ice sheets on car windscreens. Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Chris Kent said a minimum of 0.6C was recorded at West Tce in Adelaide city at 7.35am. “Previously, 0.6C was recorded on the 24 of July 1908, so we equalled that record,” Kent said. He added a colder night was recorded at in Kent Town when temperatures dropped to 0.4C in July 1982.
“This is driving a lot of cool air from well south of the continent over southern states. “We’ve also got clear skies and calm conditions in terms of winds, so we’re able to get temperatures that can get quite cool in those weather patterns.” BOM said Victoria, southern Western Australia and Tasmania would likely have their coldest morning of the week on Wednesday before it will get warmer from Friday.
