It’s hard to imagine that American dancer Robin Antin really could have had any idea that the dance troupe she created in Los Angeles 30 years ago would go on to spur a worldwide global phenomenon, a movie starring Cher, and a musical opening in Manchester, of all places, this week.
With Steven behind the book and a co-producer of the musical, Robin takes on the roles of associate choreographer and creative co-producer. For the two, they say that getting to work together once again on something that is so personal to them has been a dream come true. “Everything we’re here about today came about from that little 20-minute burlesque show that Robin created at the Viper Room,” Steven explains. “It was Johnny who was pushing us for a name of the group to put up on the club’s marquee. We always talked about the film Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, so we toyed with calling it Faster Pussycat but that didn’t sound right.”
“A lot of people take credit for bringing neo-burlesque back to Los Angeles, but honestly, one person did it and that’s Robin Antin. It’s no exaggeration. What she did really paved the way for so many artists and performers. Burlesque is not what people think it is, it was brought out of Vaudeville. It was an amalgamation of ideas, songs, comedy, genre and farce - it was all of these great things put together.
And it’s not just Robin and Steven who are returning to the world of Burlesque. The film’s original star Christina Aguilera also serves as an executive producer for the adaptation. “Christina’s support has been unbelievable and off the charts,” Steven added. “She created the character of Ali and wrote those songs, she made it happen so it was important we had her say on things. It was like a pinch me and peel me off the ceiling moment when she said yes to coming on as my producing partner.
“In Los Angeles, we know about London but we also know Manchester as a place for music and concerts,” he explains. “We were actually originally locked into another theatre elsewhere but the thought of Manchester just kept coming back to me. The show has to feel like a show, like a concert, and we felt that it was Manchester that could help bring that aspect to life.”
