Hot new musical Burlesque gets its world premiere in Manchester this week, after a sizzling week of previews at the Opera House. And if the verdicts of the first audiences at the historic theatre are anything to go by, ticketholders are in for something of a treat.
She plays Ali, the aspiring smalltown singer who moves to LA and finds herself in a dazzling burlesque club. Meanwhile American singer, dancer, choreographer and TV star Todrick Hall plays the role of Sean - while also penning five tracks for the musical. Todrick recalls first seeing the movie back in 2010 and loving it. So when he was approached to get involved by the film's writer Steven Antin, alongside the show's other music and lyrical contributors Christina Aguilera, Diane Warren, Sia and director Nick Winston it was a no brainer.
"The movie has become such a cult classic, and we have fans coming and they know EVERYTHING, their favourite lines, the witty catchphrases, it's really fun to see people sing along and every night we've had standing ovations. "We are getting so many burlesque performers coming to the stage door after the shows, it's really been cool to see that. It's a real female empowering show, people just love to come and feel seen and heard."
He says: "I think that he's a much bigger presence in the musical version. And yes, I do get to dance, my body is thankful for the mandatory cardio eight shows a week!"
