The musical began its life at La Jolla Playhouse in Feb. 2023.Many San Diegans will be tuning in to CBS at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 16, to watch the 77th Tony Awards ceremony in New York. This year’s ceremony features an unprecedented number of nominees from musicals that launched at La Jolla Playhouse, as well as San Diego-based artists. If you’re tuning in, here’s what to watch for.

San Diego theater designer David Israel Reynoso has earned his first Tony nomination for his costume designs in Broadway’s circus-themed “Water for Elephants.” The musical, which Menzel co-conceived with director and bookwriter and co-lyricist Tina Landau, features a score and lyrics by Kate Diaz. It’s the story of Jesse, a heartbroken New York businesswoman, who walks away from her life to live among the California redwood trees to find renewal and healing.Diversionary Theatre has named Sherri Eden Barber as its new artistic director. She fills the position left open last summer by the departure of Matt M. Morrow.

Jesse Perez, the director of The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program at USD.Jesse Perez, director of The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program at USD, is one of 10 American actors chosen to take part in the prestigious 2024 Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program at the Ten Chimneys center in Wisconsin. It runs July 21 through 28.

The other nine actors chosen for the Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program are Pascale Armand of Yale Repertory Theatre; Orlando Arriaga of Alley Theatre; Tracey Bonner of Arizona Theatre Company; Spencer Kearns and Mia Rivera embrace upon hearing they’ve won the 2024 Broadway San Diego Awards on May 26 at the Balboa Theatre.Over Memorial Day weekend, 20 San Diego County high school musical theater students, and five musical productions from local high schools, competed at the annual Broadway San Diego awards. The two winning students in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories earned an all-expense-paid trip to New York to compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards .
