Sylvia Sanchez News

Nathan Studios, which is headed by actress-turned producer Sylvia Sanchez, recently acquired six animation films for distribution in various platforms — whether theatrical or streaming — in the Philippines after attending the film market at the recently-concluded Cannes International Film Festival in France.

Director’s Factory, a 10-year-old program by the indepedent selection of the Cannes Film Festival Quinzaine Des Cineastes, spotlights the Philippines this year. Photo shows Ruby Ruiz, Shaina Magdayao, Bianca Balbuena- Liew , Brad Liew , Dominique Welinski and Sylvia Sanchez.

“Ang gaganda ng animation films, Hollywood made and one Korean,” Sylvia teased as she’s not allowed to reveal the titles as of writing. She further cited the current leadership at FDCP, led by director Joey Reyes, for also supporting her continuous participation at Cannes with the all-access badge at this year’s edition.

In “Silig,” co-directed by Cambodian filmmaker Lomorpich Rithy and the Philippines’ own Arvin Belarmino, Sylvia plays Mamang, a woman stricken with terminal cancer. She decides to return to her hometown after two decades to plan her own cremation. This leads to her reunion with Sabina , an old lover working at a funeral home. There are plans to premiere the film in the country during the QCinema later this year.

Momo Film Co is a Singapore-based film and TV company founded in 2018 by Tan Si En and Kris Ong, whom Sylvia also previously met at the Locarno international filmfest in Switzerland. Born during the pandemic, Nathan Studios ventured into film and TV production, starting with “Cattleya Killer,” a co-production with ABS-CBN International Productions. It was the first Filipino drama-thriller series showcased at MIPCOM, the annual trade show for the TV industry also held in Cannes, France.
