With performing arts organizations worldwide still recovering from the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, some eyebrows are raised at spending money — a good deal of it — to send an orchestra abroad. Payments from the presenting venues don’t begin to cover the travel and lodging expenses. Are bragging rights for playing in European concert halls worth the cost to hometown supporters?
Repertory for the tour includes Tchaikovsky’s Fifth and Sixth symphonies, Mahler’s Fifth, the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, Four Walt Whitman Songs by Kurt Weill, John Williams’ Violin Concerto No. 2 and recent works by past and present DSO composers-in-residence: Angélica Negrón’sMcGuinness and Luisi started planning the tour by considering repertory possibilities. Then they suggested programs to KD Schmid, an international firm that books tours for top orchestras and other ensembles.
Temperature control is important for wooden instruments. On a previous tour, too long an exposure to Texas heat at the airport made several double basses come unglued. Once in Europe, players and management had to track down other instruments to borrow for performances.
