When mum-of-two Gemma Farquhar was 35, she was told she most likely wouldn’t make her 36th birthday. The Sydney woman spent precious months trying to get to the bottom of her ongoing vomiting and debilitating abdominal pain, only to be diagnosed time and again with gastroenteritis. But in fact Gemma had a large tumour winding its way around her bowel — she had cancer.
During the treatment, chemotherapy drugs are heated to 42 degrees and flushed through the abdomen to try to kill any cancerous cells that may remain after surgery. Gemma spent five days in ICU before moving to the ward, where she had to relearn how to walk. “My focus was getting my strength back up,” she says. Each day she grew stronger, and tackled every new treatment option with a brave face.
