A new exhibition dedicated to Gaultier’s lifelong passion for film is now on view at SCAD Lacoste, organized by Paris’s Cinémathèque française and the “La Caixa” Foundation.

For Jean Paul Gaultier, asking what came first, his love for fashion or film, is akin to the classic chicken-or-egg debate. As a self-proclaimed “child of the TV” in the late 1960s, he grew up as mesmerized by specials dedicated to haute couture fashion shows as reruns of old movies. “I didn’t want to go out and play—I wanted to watch TV,” the French designer tells Vogue, adding that by 13, his sartorial calling was clear.

She wore a corset in one of the numbers, and I told her that if she needed a corset she should come to me, I would do a better job. And a couple of years later, she did. The Blond Ambition tour led to more than 30 years of friendship. We worked together again for this year’s tour. Even though I left fashion, when she calls, I am there for her.
