The elephant was reportedly spooked by a car backfiring nearby as she was being washed for a show that night.BUTTE, Mont. — Residents in a Montana town had a surprise visit from an escaped circus elephant Tuesday, who was caught on camera walking through the town's streets. She then took a stroll through scenic Butte, Montana, catching the attention of residents passing by.

“I though he just meant it was in the parking lot. And then I looked up and was like, ‘No, there is an elephant in the road!’” said Smith.
