Debate is raging over the umpires’ treatment of polarising AFL youngster Jack Ginnivan during Hawthorn’s traditional Easter Monday clash with Geelong. The 2023 Collingwood premiership player is one of many players whose deliberate tactics to draw head-high free kicks in recent years has forced the AFL to legislate against playing for the whistle.

umpires under fire for appearing to miss Jack Ginnivan free kicks. Umpires are now instructed not to blow the whistle for a player who is taken above the shoulder but has contributed to the high contact by dropping at the knees or raising their arms. On multiple occasions on Monday afternoon, Ginnivan appeared to do just that, and was refused a free kick by the umpires.
