I think the police got a little too excited in their pursuit of Smollett and made several legal and procedural fuck-ups. There was no need for them to announce Smollett's guilt prior to having all the facts.

Guys, words have meaning. You are not exonerated (absolved of blame for wrongdoing) when you forfeit your bond (pay financial restitution) & apply previous community service as community restitution. He paid for his crimes in a plea bargain. Being wealthy/connected has advantages
