A reclusive, contradictory figure, Walker was never at ease with pop stardom. His orchestral pop was frequently scattered with characters from society's margins - prostitutes, transvestites, suicidal brooders and even Joseph Stalin.
After 1984's Climate of Hunter, he walked away from music for almost a decade. When he returned in the mid-1990s, it was with Tilt, a collection of fraught, uncompromising tone poems. "Imagine Andy Williams reinventing himself as Stockhausen," wrote The Guardian's Simon Hattenstone inWalker went on to collaborate with Pulp, producing the 2001 album We Love Life. He recently completed the score to Natalie Portman film Vox Lux.Radiohead's Thom Yorke said he was"so very sad" to hear of Walker's passing, saying he had been"a huge influence" on both the band and himself.
The singer-songwriter said he had met Walker once at the Meltdown arts festival in London and found him to be"such a gentle outsider".So very sad to hear that Scott Walker has passed away, he was a huge influence on Radiohead and myself, showing me how i could use my voice and words. Met him once at Meltdown, such a kind gentle outsider. He will be very missed.
Greatest voice of all time.RIPScott

My mate Larry is an enigma too

Scott Walker: A life in music in pictures
The most extraordinary voice and beautiful to look at. I loved the early music and the Brel but for me, the later music wasn’t groundbreaking, it was pure anguish. I couldn’t listen to that suffering, it was too sad. I think his latter years must have been torture for him.
Ticket from 1967, The Jimi Hendix Experience also played that night...RIP Scott Walker.
How sad such a great voice
Ahh the sun ain’t going to shine any more xx

Sad news.
My mum has spoken about the Walker Brothers as long as I can remember. I know the music from years of her playing it. beautiful voice, very sad.
R.I.P. Scott Walker, one of the few in music to truly deserve the epithet 'genius'.
Please remove the word 'rock' from your description. Scott Walker was not a rock musician: his astounding music is far too wide ranging and special to be categorised as rock.
Brimson1 Sad to hear. I'm already revisiting the album's I have. He was such a great interpreter of songs, his renditions of Brel are fabulous and his own songs glorious. Listening currently to The Seventh Seal.
Oh no! Such a beautiful voice and face. Saw him live about 1965 and have never forgotten waiting outside Sheffield City Hall to get a glimpse of him leaving, and nearly having my foot run over by his car........
