At The Gates director Augustus Meleo Bernstein discusses real-life inspirations, the horror movie influence, and the casting process for the movie.

Summary Ana and Nico are at the center of a terrifying conspiracy in At The Gates. When Immigration Enforcement agents come to the house of their employers, an affluent Los Angeles family, they are offered a place to hide in their basement. As days pass and tensions rise, Nico begins to wonder about this family's motivation and what the true danger to him and his mother may be.

Augustus Meleo Bernstein: That's exactly what we were going for—something that was mysterious and pulls you in and makes you think about some bigger ideas, hopefully. Augustus Meleo Bernstein: There were immigration raids happening in 2017 that were affecting people that I was very close to. It reminded me, in the darkest ways, of the story of Anne Frank and about a family that's hiding from police inside another family's house.

I'm curious: why is it that Nico is so quick to distrust that's going on? Because it really feels like he never fully accepts what he's been told. Augustus Meleo Bernstein: We cast this movie during COVID and it was actually at this change, where now everyone does Zoom auditions, but it allowed us to meet with a lot of different people. And finally, after we pushed the shoot back because we felt like we didn't find the right Nico. And finally, over Zoom, I met with Ezekiel who, in his real life, he is here under the DACA program, and he grew up without papers for his entire childhood living in Los Angeles.
