Review: Idris Elba directed his first movie, about Jamaican gangsters. It’s actually pretty good.

Aml Ameen plays a Jamaican drug courier in London in “Yardie,” the directorial debut of actor Idris Elba. By Michael O'Sullivan Michael O'Sullivan Film critic and reporter covering movies and the people who make them Email Bio Follow Reporter March 13 at 5:58 PM Rating:

It’s easy to see the appeal of the source material: a 1992 pulp bestseller by Jamaican-born British author Victor Headley about a Jamaican drug courier who gets caught up in a spiral of retaliation that, in its early pages, evokes memories of the classic 1972 cult film “The Harder They Come.

In a broad sense, little of this story is especially new, and not just because of “The Harder They Come,” whose patterns of transgression and hubris echo here. “Yardie” also follows in the footsteps of numerous other crimes dramas, where the theme of corrupted innocence is tried and true.

So much ideas, but they always chooses the gangster thing.

ACTUALLY?! Idris Elba is amazing, you cretins!

Where was it shot...in South London ?

Who cares?

'...actually pretty good'. The condescension is Thick.

It’s actually pretty good, for a negro?

'actually'... Damn that sounds patronizing.

So, you’re saying you’re surprised it’s good?

'It's actually pretty good.' ಠ_ಠ

Saw it last year & it rings true

“Actually”

“Actually” inserted for faux outrage and clicks. A new WaPo trick. See yesterday’s “pushed pushing” event.

That’s such an insulting title sis you that title for Bradley Cooper as well?

Why is WaPo surprised it’s good? Who writes this stuff?

Why the surprise?

Elba is terrific. “Actually?” Who is writing these headlines Jesus

slimpickens2916 WaPo, you should delete and try again with this headline.

Idris disappointed you 😂😂

Looking forward to watching this!

Wtf is this tweet? Why “actually” - is there any reason we shouldn’t expect it to be good? Why so unnecessarily offensive?

“actually” justiceforidriselba

Duh. He's black and he knows what he's doing. You think a white guy can make a movie about Jamaican gangsters? It would look like this:

Oof, bad headline.

No it’s not!!! Hahahahah

Why wouldn’t it be “actually “ instead of just good

Why would it not be good? Plenty of actors find success behind the camera. Provided they’ve worked hard, learned the trade, and sexually pleasured the right people.

Wow. Like a movie directed by a black guy about black guys is doomed to suck, right? Get a grip, . You'd better hope idriselba won't read this

No it ain’t it’s whack 36zero

...did you expect it not to be? There’s some real subtext in this headline
