Johann Zarco has broken the heart of teammate Martin Jorge to pull off his maiden MotoGP win in an Australian Grand Prix epic. Jorge had led for the entire race — 26 of the 27 laps, and 316 of the 324 corners — before a soft rear tyre “destroyed itself” to leave him a “sitting duck” in the final few laps.

Jorge had opened up a lead as big as almost four seconds on the chasing group that included Zarco, Fabio Di Giannantonio, championship leader Francesco ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia and Brad Binder, but was being mowed down in the final few laps of the Phillip Island race. “He is a passenger, a sitting duck,” Moto GP commetator Matt Birt said of Martin, whose lead was evaporating by the sector.
