Even after 26 seasons, the upcoming special South Park: Joining the Panderverse managed to change Kenny, Stan, Cartman, and Butters completely.

Quick Links Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT While South Park’s upcoming special features a surprising show first, this may not be a good thing for the long-running cartoon comedy show. Every animated sitcom needs to reinvent its routine every once in a while. The Simpsons season 34 garnered the show’s best reviews in years by changing its formula, resulting in new episodes that felt fresh and original.

While South Park season 27 might still be a long way away, the first of the show’s 2023 specials is set to arrive surprisingly soon. According to a teaser trailer that dropped in early October, South Park: Joining the Panderverse will air on October 28, 2023. Details are sparse, but there are at least some hints found in the teaser that provide a preview of the story. Based on what's known so far, Joining the Panderverse looks set to pull off a series first.

The subject of South Park’s new special is tough to ascertain from a brief one-minute promo, but the title and the clip seem to suggest that Joining the Panderverse will be a critique of reboots that recast famous characters with more diverse actors. This is a surprisingly played-out theme for South Park to address, particularly when The Streaming Wars focused on hot-button topics like NFTs and streaming service battles at the height of their relevance.

South Park’s New Special Must Avoid A Recent Mistake Although South Park season 18, episode 3, “The Cissy” was comparatively progressive in reference to gender issues, season 23, episode 7, “Board Girls” was accused of being transphobic and painfully unfunny. Ironically given the title of the show’s new special, “Board Girls” was a blatant case of the show’s creators pandering to reactionary elements of their fan base by writing cheap jokes at the expense of trans people.
