"Mallari" is a partly fictional, partly true-to-life account inspired by the true story of Fr Juan Severino Mallari, a parish priest in the 1800s who killed 57 people before being caught, thereby becoming the first and only recorded Filipino serial killer ever, antedating Jack The Ripper by more than 60 years.
The film expands the story by translating the Mallari experience into a unique three-timeline narrative, intertwining: Fr. Severino Mallari in the 1800s; Johnrey Mallari, a grand-nephew in the 1940s; and most importantly, present-day Dr Jonathan Mallari De Dios, a doctor and great-great-nephew, occupying the greatest proportion of the storyline.
His discovery gains paramount importance in the present-day Dr. Jonathan’s relationship with girlfriend Agnes, when Agnes gets mortally sick with no cure—. And the house soon yields its secrets. Jonathan discovers the missing reels of his more recent ancestor, his great-great uncle Johnrey, a documentarian who also investigated the Severino case, and disappeared.
