What was originally titled “Gypsy: A Musical Fable” is now known by audiences in its shortened title form as just “Gypsy.” This musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, and focuses more on her mother, Rose, the latter whom is now forever associated with as the most pointed to example of a “stage mother.” Marriott Theatre has a new production of “Gypsy” now running through Oct. 15, 2023.

Lee’s written reply to Lahaie arrived on personalized letterhead which read “From the Dressing Room of Gypsy Rose Lee,” care of KGO-TV of San Francisco, the television station which was then producing’s Lee syndicated TV talk show “Gypsy,” which aired for 754 episodes from 1965 to 1968.Gypsy Rose Lee is shown performing as a carnival headliner in 1954 during her U.S. show tour.

This musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of Lee, and focuses more on her mother, Rose, the latter whom is now forever associated with as the most pointed to example of a “stage mother.” Cleverly directed for this “theater-in-the-round space” by Amanda Dehnert, with precision choreography by Stephanie Klemons and musical direction by Jeff Award Winner Ryan T. Nelson, there is a wide and welcomed spotlight on the celebrated score with all the glorious hit songs including “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Let Me Entertain You,” “Some People” and “Together Wherever We Go.

In real life, a series of arrests for “indecent exposure” because of her signature show biz stage striptease while touring in the 1940s brought the real Gypsy Rose Lee immense publicity, along with newspaper interviews and promotion from coast to coast. June Havoc lived far longer than both her equally famous sister and mother. She died at age 97 in 2010 at her home in Stamford, Connecticut.
