Rain clouds made way for red, white and blue smoke trails of the iconic Red Arrows hawk jets as they launched Blackpool Air Show 2023. The famous red planes looped, dipped and circled in the skies above Blackpool Promenade as thousands looked on in open-mouthed wonder.
The fast-jets, piloted by the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, demonstrated their skills for the first of two displays at the annual free weekend event on the seafront. The air show takes place between Central and North Pier, focusing on the Tower Festival Headland area. For the first time, a Red Arrows Hawk is on display close to Central pier for visitors to get up close to and also sit in the cockpit. The striking red planes flew over Blackpool Tower in formation at 2pm and will do the same on Sunday. The morning weather was gloomy, wet and windy, but the clouds lifted and the sun made an appearance just in time for the Red Arrows to dance above the Irish Sea.
Post-flight, the planes will head off over Lancashire, Cumbria and beyond while on Sunday they will fly to their home base at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire. They are likely to be spotted in places such as Ormskirk, Trawden, Barrowford, Longridge, Wesham, and Cleveleys. Summer is the busiest time of the year for the Red Arrows, who have 60 performances to complete, with Blackpool Air Show marking the halfway point.View gallery Red Arrows display schedule August 12 - August 13 Red Arrows route and timings for August 13
