Director Lucky McKee reveals that his 2022 Stephen Lang horror movie Old Man was marketed as part of an entirely unrelated franchise in Russia.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The 2022 horror movie Old Man was marketed in Russia as a prequel to Don't Breathe. The movie stars Stephen Lang as a hermit who takes in a lost hiker, which kicks off a sinister game of cat and mouse. Its only connection to the Don't Breathe franchise is the star, as Lang played a man with blindness who violently defended his Detroit home in the 2016 horror hit.

JB Hi-Fi recently published an interview with Old Man director Lucky McKee, who is best known for May 2002, The Woman, and All Cheerleaders Die. During their conversation, he revealed that the Russian release of Old Man was mismarketed as Don't Breathe: The Beginning because of Lang's presence. He compared this to faux franchise movies, such as Zombi 2, that "the Italians used to do back in the day.

In Russia, they released it as Don’t Breathe: The Beginning. Kind of like the Italians used to do back in the day, with movies like Zombi 2. Horror History is Full of Fakeout Sequels While it may seem surprising that Old Man was retitled Don't Breathe: The Beginning, McKee's comparison to Italian horror movies of the 1970s and 1980s is apt. Especially in that region, homegrown releases were sometimes given titles to connect them to unrelated franchises to boost their potential profits. Lucio Fulci's Zombi 2, in particular, was advertised as a sequel to George A.

This faux prequel to Don't Breathe now updates that tradition for the modern age. The use of this kind of marketing may be questionable, but it could nevertheless continue to build support for the actual franchise. Don't Breathe 3 is reportedly in the early stages of development, and international support could help push it across the finish line, even if it's under false pretenses.
