Vice President Kamala Harris said the devastation and loss of life caused by wildfires in Hawaii are"tragic", and reiterated Joe Biden's message of"full support" for authorities on the ground dealing with the aftermath.

"It is tragic what has happened there, I have full faith and confidence in the leadership in Hawaii to stay on top of this, but they will have our full support," she added. This combination of satellite images provided by Maxar Technologies shows an overview of Lahaina on Maui in June, compared with an overview of the same area this week following the devastating wildfires.

And the last image is another before and after photo, also from June and this week, of southern Lahaina.The fires have left a trail of extensive devastation in Lahaina, a coastal resort city with a rich history as a whaling centre and the former capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, now attracting two million annual tourists.
