Hawaii fires latest: Deadly flames overtook town 'without warning' as death toll rises to 55

Vice President Kamala Harris said the devastation and loss of life caused by wildfires in Hawaii are"tragic", and reiterated Joe Biden's message of"full support" for authorities on the ground dealing with the aftermath.

This combination of satellite images provided by Maxar Technologies shows an overview of Lahaina on Maui in June, compared with an overview of the same area this week following the devastating wildfires. The fires have not spared the Big Island either, scorching sections of its landscape. The destructive impact has led to the destruction or damage of 271 structures, as documented by official reports from the US Civil Air Patrol and Maui Fire Department, as cited by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

She's not the only one frantically searching from afar. Marcia Reynolds, of Natick, Massachusetts, had been deciphering handwritten shelter sign-in sheets posted online for signs of her sister, 77-year-old Regina Campisi, who is recovering from surgery. She was later found safe, Reynolds said.The origins of the fires, which ignited on Tuesday night, remain undetermined.

Facing the grim reality, Leonard shared,"I've got nothing left", while seated on an inflatable mattress outside a shelter designated for wildfire evacuees from Lahaina. This destructive blaze, which swept through the coastal Maui town, has already claimed numerous lives with an expected increase in the toll. Over 1,000 buildings have succumbed to the flames, transforming a cherished centuries-old village into a barren, scorched expanse.
