Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Production designer Sarah Greenwood reveals one scene in Barbie that was surprisingly created practically rather than with CGI. Since releasing in theaters, Barbie has proven to be one of the biggest movies of 2023, breaking box-office records along with Oppenheimer and receiving positive reviews from audiences and critics alike.
Kyle Buchanan of The New York Times shared Greenwood's revelation about one surprising practical effect in Barbie. The scene in question is the opening scene in Barbie, which pays homage to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. It shows the advent of Barbie, the first adult doll for little girls. The little girls quickly abandon their baby dolls when they see the glorious Barbie standing like a monolith before them. It's a supersized Barbie, and the girls only come up to her knees.
What Other Practical Effects Does Barbie Use? The opening scene introducing Robbie's titular character is far from the only practical effect in Barbie. Gerwig has revealed that the use of practical effects was intentional. She wanted to create a movie that mimicked what playtime looked like and ensured that all setpieces were real. Hence, a lot of Barbieland was real rather than CGI.The most practical effects can be seen when Barbie and Ken leave Barbieland for the real world.
To add to the movie's toy setting, Gerwig wanted the various locations to look like they came from a diorama box instead of being digitally created. Hence, outer space had planets hung by wires and clouds that moved on conveyor belts, while the field of flowers had real tulips in the foreground. Gerwig, the cast, and the crew spoke with pride about how everything was done theatrically and in the style of old-school filming.
