Despite its many ultra-successful animated iterations, Akira Toriyama's hit shounen manga has floundered in the live-action movie realm, especially when it comes to casting decisions. The 2009 live-action Hollywood feature Dragonball Evolution angered both Dragon Ball fans and the series creator, encouraging filmmakers to avoid the franchise.
Joe Taslim As Vegeta Goku’s enemy-turned-friend Vegeta is a much more impulsive and hostile character. Starting out as a ruthless, cold-blooded killer, Vegeta eventually becomes Goku's equal and even surpasses him. The former villain also uses his prowess on the battlefield to save the planet. Even when he sides with the heroes, however, Vegeta remains a morally gray character. The Raid star and martial artist Joe Taslim is the right choice for bringing out Vegeta's devilish charm.
Mark Hamill As Frieza A ruthless tyrant responsible for the Saiyan genocide, Frieza is one of the franchise’s most enduring villains. However, unlike others who rank among the best Dragon Ball villains of all time, Frieza maintains an eerily calm composure and speaks in an eloquent-yet-chilling manner. Given his iconic take on Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, long-time voice actor Mark Hamill is more than capable of emulating Frieza's sinister nature.
Ali Wong As Chi-Chi The princess of Fire Mountain and Goku’s wife, Chi-Chi is an influential Dragon Ball Z character who strays away from the franchise’s mostly hypermasculine ensemble. While she is initially shown as very shy, she eventually grows up to become a fierce and outspoken character. Given Chi-Chi's many humorous moments, comedian and actor Ali Wong is right for the part, which requires both lots of energy and a commanding delivery.
