What was it like growing up with a famous dad, did he influence your love of music? Absolutely. Dad was an absolute superstar in the showband era during the ‘60s and ‘70s and he really became a massive star when he placed runner-up in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1967. In the early ‘80s I used to go out on the road with him for a few shows and he’d get me up on stage to sing a few songs. I saw the reaction from the crowd and how much they loved my dad.
Do you have any childhood memories of your father’s Eurovision success? Yes, I wasn’t born at the time but I grew up knowing that there were millions of people watching dad. I always knew things were slightly different for me having a famous dad. In school all my teachers knew him and I would tell everybody who my dad was because I was so proud of him. He was a massive idol in my life, probably my one and only, I have always looked up to him. He was a wonderful man.
The High Kings spend a lot of time touring, is it difficult to be on the road for so much of the year? Obviously it can be tough, but it is all about the mindset. You spend as much time with family as you can when you are at home but when you get back out on the road it’s about the band, making things work and thinking about the future. You’re here for the band at the end of the day.
