He’s reined in – just a little, mind you – by co-star Nicholas Hoult. They share the limelight , with Hoult as Robert Montague Renfield, a character from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel who has been played on screen by the likes of Alexander Granach , Klaus Kinski, Tom Waits and Mark Gatiss.Renfield is Dracula’s familiar, charged with procuring fresh meat and cleaning up the mess afterward, not to mention saving his master from the occasional vampire hunter.
She’s great in the role, although her motivations may be the most cookie-cutter of the bunch. Second place in that category goes to Ben Schwartz as the film’s main villain, a would-be drug lord always in the shadow of his mom and with a habit of using crime-scene objects as weapons, thus giving new meaning to the phrase “coked out.”
