In all, only 33 of the state’s 83 rest areas will be replaced, DeWine said, but he added the other 50 will get “a little face lift.”

. Now, that vision is becoming a reality, as in the next few years more than 30 rest stops around the state are getting new buildings playing Ohio-themed music and with displays highlighting attractions up the road., along Interstate 70 in Preble County, just east of the border with Indiana. The walls were covered with photos and information about nearby attractions such as the Wright Brothers National Museum, Hueston Woods State Park, and the Dayton Dragons minor-league baseball team.

Another five rebuilt rest areas are scheduled to be completed in 2024 in Fayette, Muskingum, and Belmont counties, DeWine said, followed by 13 rest stops in 2025 and 10 rest areas in 2026 . The cost of the new Preble County rest area, as well as work on two other renovated rest areas that finished in 2019, cost a combined $15 million, ODOT spokeswoman Erica Hawkins said at the time.
