Godzilla and the Titans director and executive producer Matt Shakman explains how the upcoming show connects to the larger MonsterVerse and Godzilla vs. Kong 2. After the titular monster returned in a big way in 2014 with Gareth Edwards' hit monster movie, the creature has since cropped up in a direct sequel and a showdown movie with King Kong himself. The creature now has two projects on the horizon with Apple TV+'s Godzilla and the Titans and director Adam Wingard's Godzilla vs.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview with Collider, Shakman touches on how connected the upcoming Godzilla and the Titans show will be to other projects in Legendary's MonsterVerse. While affirming that there have been conversations between the makers of the upcoming show and Wingard's team on Godzilla vs. Kong 2, the director does say that the interconnectedness of the two properties is less extreme than the relationship between the MCU Disney+ shows and feature films.
"There is some overlap, though we were not heavily involved in talking about it with Adam Wingard and his team. Legendary is the studio for our show, as well as for the films, and so they sort of sit at the juncture there between the two, and they have a mythology department there which is wonderful. So they weigh in on how things might overlap, how certain creatures need to stay on one side or the other, and so there is a lot of conversation about it.
Godzilla vs. Kong 2, on the other hand, which doesn't yet have an official title, will continue the story from Wingard's original showdown movie as the two titular monsters team up to face off against a colossal new threat. The upcoming sequel will continue to explore each of the monsters' origins as well as that of Skull Island and Hollow Earth. While Millie Bobby Brown will not be returning for Godzilla vs.
Outside of the live-action MonsterVerse projects, there is also an animated series in development called Skull Island, which will release on Netflix. While the show doesn't yet have a release date, it is expected to follow a new cast of characters as they become shipwrecked on Skull Island where they meet Kong. Audiences can expect to see Wingard's sequel in March, but Apple TV+'s Godzilla and the Titans doesn't yet have an official release date beyond some point this year.
