Shaquille O'Neal has defended his appearance in ads for the collapsed cryptocurrency firm FTX, saying 'I don't understand crypto'

O'Neal, who appeared in an ad for the company in June, has insisted he had no real involvement.

"A lot of people think I'm involved, but I was just a paid spokesperson for a commercial," he told CNBC Make It."I don't understand it, so I will probably stay away from it until I get a full understanding of what it is," he said.

Its rise with the unconventional Bankman-Fried at the helm took it to a peak value of $26bn , as it secured naming rights for sports stadiums and a growing list of celebrity endorsements. In a June advert, O'Neal said he was"partnering with FTX to help make crypto accessible to everyone".

He didn't care if it was a scam or legit as he got paid in real money

Pretty sure shaq is one of the most grounded and generous human beings on earth. Sometimes shit just happens.

cindygallop Me neither shaq

I believe him. who gives a shit? the people that invested billions didn't understand it either lmao blaming the guy that did a tv ad seems dumb at best, racist at worst. what about Matt Damon? what about Larry David? leave him alone

Clowns blaming or having a pop at him.

Lol

Ignorance is never an excuse.

Who’s not conscious?

I think Shaq just likes to sell shit lmao

Chase the bag, king 👑💰

Fair enough, need a list of the form of payment each celebrity took, that'd be funny.

Never met a crypto guy who did so I guess this checks out

'In my defense, I'm stupid' might work when Shaq says it.

Then he shouldn't be repping it. That simple. Honest, but wack defense.

Well sh¡t, that ain't a good look.

I believe him, therefore he innocent

fair defense

HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE JUST LIKE HIM AND BUDDIES AT TNT HELD KYRIE ACCOUNTABLE FOR HIS WORDS.

I love shaq, but it always rubbed me the wrong way how he endorses crypto shit while clearly not understanding it at all, yet on the pivot interview he says that he’d never endorse something he thinks ppl wouldn’t like, like come on og, you’re better than that

Lmaooo

Based

Here’s how to understand crypto. If you want to buy any, go to the atm, pull out $200 and just light $120 on fire. That’s basically what you’re doing

CityBureaucrat I believe him.

Shaq should just preface every advertisement he's in to say that he has no idea what the product is lol

lol

I’m sorry, wasn’t it a meme that Shaw DIDN’T do the ads? But apparently he has?

thejoeyswoll dont you follow the FTX crypto scams? 😂😂😂😂

GarbageApe

He understands money in the bank though

GarbageApe And that's how I beat Shaq

👑👑👑👑👑👑👑

Give the money back

LDGaal That’s the advertising business, folks. Did you honestly expect anything else? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Nobody does, don't worry

GarbageApe I’m mean neither do crypto bros

I can respect this

GarbageApe This was the same guy when offered the chance to own some Starbucks franchises turned it down because, 'Black people don't drink coffee'

I believe him. 😂

Bencjacobs FUN FACT: It is a fundamental legal principle in the US that ignorance of the law is no defense. Pumping a ponzi is pumping a ponzi.

A fool and their money....

Celebes usually do ads for guess what…..MONEY! Use a bit of intelligence & think for yourself.

Bad take. US capitalism will never walk away from true innovation. However, it should step back from storytellers of no substance. FTX & Greensill were 'visionaries' with no technical or risk management innovation: they were just selling scale - faking it with complicit VC funds.
