“It’s a miracle that I’m here.”

Waving goodbye to the arena audience after their opening set, Farrell told the San Franciscan crowd, “Not bad for having started at the Kennel Club,” referencing the bygone rock venue once located on Divisadero. Jane’s drummer Stephen Perkins added to the local nostalgia with a shout out to “Sushi Sundays” at the Nightbreak, a lost haunt on Haight Street. They band walked out to a recording of “ATUM”, the title track from their latest rock opera .

A dazzling light show with a giant blinking star hung above the stage. At one point, three scarecrows hung up on crosses were rolled out to add to the ambiance. Behind the stage, two large installations that looked like creepy clown towers overlooked the band, but weren't visible to most fans. The two teenage boys in front of me unleashed air guitar solos during “Empire,” interesting considering their languid posture when the band played the older favorite “Cherub Rock” later in the show.

Corgan added that he visited the doctor for his laryngitis while in San Francisco and said that, “If you’re going to get vampire blood, it might as well be billionaire vampire blood in San Francisco... Two days ago I could barely talk. It’s a miracle that I’m here.” He also commented about the band’s 30-plus year run and joked that instead of starting The Smashing Pumpkins, he and Iha should have founded a “dot com.” The crowd joyfully booed at the idea.
