what might go down as one of the great one-scene roles in cinema’s history—and thrusting him, improbably, to the center of Oscar season for the first time in decades.
At the midpoint of Spielberg’s autobiographical drama, which examines a young filmmaker’s origin story against the backdrop of his family’s joys and tragedies in post–World War II America, the Bronx native hurtles into frame like a crotchety hurricane, and exits almost as quickly . Hirsch plays the protagonist’s estranged great-uncle, Boris.
But Hirsch knew this man. “Inside me is the old guy,” he tells me. “I think that has been true ever since I was born.” Spielberg told Hirsch that Uncle Boris was Ukrainian, “but really Russian,” just like Hirsch’s mother and many of her generation from the southern region were; the actor himself has felt that lineage his whole life.
Judd Hirsch was so outstanding in this. One of my favorite scenes in the film.
