Zubot stresses the VSO played a major part in the collaborative creation of the score, securing grant funding to produce the work. He sees such collaborations as a great contribution to the continuing reconciliation process with Canada’s Indigenous Peoples. Being involved in creating art that tells the stories that need to be told is an honour for Zubot and one that he says makes him work even harder on doing the best work possible whenever he collaborates. The final mixes tend to involve a lot of long solitary hours, so it’s a good trade-off.Article content
Naturally, the demands placed on any composer are bound to get in the way of pursuing a parallel career as a performing musician. While he will always be ready to go out on tour with Tagaq, Zubot says composing is a welcome change after decades on the road.
