The Patron Brunch at the Telluride Film Festival is a wonderful kick-off for the four day festival, featuring incredible views, scrumptious food and an opportunity to get some face time with the filmmakers and talent who’ve just arrived at the festival .Robert Downey Jr., who were in town for the premiere of the documentaryby looking back at his career, and also following him during the last few years of his life.
At the brunch, Downey Jr. was full of his usual energy and humor, but also seemed to be reflecting on the legacy of his father. He tellsTwo Tons of Turquoise to Taos Tonight . Now, he’s returning with a film about his father in a very full circle moment. “We like circles,” he says. “Sometimes you have to force them to be circular so you can make sense of it. This one is a little more organic.”and was filmed over the past few years, beginning in 2019. Downey Jr. also appears in the film with his father, who died in July 2021 from complications from Parkinson’s Disease.
And Downey revealed that his father’s presence was looming large for him in more ways than one. He told us a tale about his father, who at one time worked at the World's Fair, and was lifting a barrel of chemicals when injured his back. "About 11 seconds before we left to come here, I pulled my back,” admitted Downey Jr. “So I'm in this weird, meditation of empathy for my dad's ongoing pain, and I'll tell you: sprains at altitude are all the more enjoyable.
In chipper spirits for someone dealing with back pain, Downey Jr. was also welcomed to the festival by executive director, who came by to greet him and introduced Downey to her son, who was clearly excited to be meeting Iron Man. While he may not be here in a superhero capacity, Downey Jr. promised the young fan thatJulie Huntsinger, Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey and the Telluride brunch.
