James Gunn's animated cameo might continue into the next season of Harley Quinn, as he mentions plans for a sequel of his in-universe Thomas Wayne biopic. The adult animated comedy centered on iconic DC villain Harley Quinn is currently in season 3, with episodes releasing weekly. Led by Kaley Cuoco and Lake Bell, the latest season has so far seen Harley and Poison Ivy finally give in to their romantic tension and strike up a relationship.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Series creators Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey had previous knowledge that Gunn was a fan of Harley Quinn due to his social media comments about the series. Due to his career trajectory as a big name in the superhero genre, they decided he was the perfect fit for a cameo in the animated series.
It's no surprise that Gunn would be willing to return to the Harley-Verse. A fan of the DC character, he worked with Harley Quinn previously when Margot Robbie returned to the role in 2021's The Suicide Squad. According to producers, Gunn conducted his remote recording sessions for Harley Quinn while shooting Suicide Squad spin-off Peacemaker, which just goes to show his commitment to the part.
Harley Quinn season 3 is set to end on September 15. Luckily, season 4 has already been renewed, so audiences don't have to worry about the future of the popular series. Whether Gunn returns for the next season, his next and reportedly final MCU project, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, will release on May 23, 2023. Even though he is hard at work on Peacemaker season 2 and other DC projects, it seems entirely possible that he could carve out some time for another hilarious cameo.
