When we pulled up from the street, it looked like a bunker. There were brick all on one side and it was all overgrown.”
But it only took a moment to see the interior, with a bank of windows and a living area tied together by a fireplace. Mielke said he immediately “fell in love with it.” The work wasn’t easy. The permitting process alone caused headaches, as well as weather delays. But in late summer of last year, the build back began.
The original homeowner built the house from McDonald’s plans, which meant that some aspects were a surprise. The septic system, for example, was homemade. There were other obstacles based on the original construction.“It had the flat roof,” he said. “The biggest challenge was getting the roof to now allow water in.”
