on Sunday, if “The Power of the Dog” loses the best picture race to “CODA,” as most awards season watchers now believe will happen, it won’t be the first time that a high-end movie exalted by critics loses the Academy Award to a movie that’s embraced as more of a heart-in-the-throat crowd-pleaser. That’s been the story of the Oscars a number of times over the past three decades: “Forrest Gump” over “Pulp Fiction,” “The King’s Speech” over “The Social Network,” “Green Book” over “Roma.
So I went to back see the movie again, to sink once more into its world, to maybe respond a little more to what it’s doing — and, yes, to see how the final section of it would play differently now that I know what happens at the end. Here’s my report, with a spoiler warning: If you don’t want the ending of “The Power of the Dog” revealed in detail, stop reading.
Here are a couple of things that threw me the first time. The shot that reveals the rawhide being contaminated with anthrax shows that rawhide submerged in water. This is confusing because, not being a chemist, I assumed, naively, that water would wash rawhide clean. The other somewhat misleading scene is the one, earlier on, where we discover Peter dissecting a bunny rabbit in his bedroom. That strikes us as a bitBut no.
I just didn’t get this film. It was dull and boring. Everyone seems to be raving about it and I’m wondering what I missed.
I decided to watch ThePowerOfTheDog fell asleep once but decided to rewind and stick with it. Wish i had continued sleeping - the film is crap!! 🙄😴😴😴😴

They forgot a story. Switched characters mid stream. It was boring. Like a film student stroking their own ego. But not as bad as Drive my Car. That was 9 hours of pure agony.
It just seems like a boring movie. No hooks in the trailer, just guys in hats and dusty roads.
Hang on a minute I distinctly remember when Coda won at the SAG awards over POTD everyone was up in arms over it and dogpiled Coda, but now folks are turning on POTD again after it happened before Coda became a serious contender?. Pick a lane people
The Power of the Dog There was NOBODY to root for. It had the most unpleasant cast of characters (not the actors who were excellent) this side of a cat pan. I couldn’t have cared less for any of this people. Bronco Henry wasn’t dead. He ran away from these people.
Similar notes from the last paragraph could be made about this review. Despite the carefully wrought vocabulary, the writer concludes he didn't like the film because it didn't meet his preconceived expectations of a 'great contemporary Western.'

Well, it is a rather slow, understated film. Not a so-called 'crowdpleaser'. Film critics live in their own bubble.
Because it isn't good. Boring story and uninteresting characters.
This is such a misleading and inane heading. It’s not “dogged”; it just doesn’t depend on genre tropes or present itself spoon-fed and coated in sugar for audiences to quickly absorb. It’s a beautifully layered and dense masterwork. And one of the most emotional of the year. 🖤
It was so woke and focused on one woke topic. To be so weak minded you need to create slop like that. Sad.
