Film review: The Lost City gets a D

So what went wrong? Well, the screenplay, cobbled together by four writers including fraternal directors Aaron and Adam Nee, isn’t exactly inspired. It imagines that romance novelist Loretta Sage is kidnapped while promoting her newest book,Captured by an eccentric billionaire who thinks she can help him find an actual lost treasure, Loretta is spirited away to an Atlantic island with a real/a million other movies vibe.

It’s a decent setup as far as it goes, but that’s as far as it goes. After Jack falls by the wayside it’s up to Alan and Loretta to figure their way out of captivity, something neither is cut out for. Between her purple sequined jumpsuit and his billowy open shirts, they look like half of ABBA touring the Caribbean.Article content

The movie shoehorns in a bunch of forgettable secondary characters, including Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Loretta’s agent; Patti Harrison as that modern cliché of cluelessness, the social media manager; and Oscar Nunez as a horny local who shows up at just the right moment with a plane for hire. In fact, they all arrive as needed, then fade into the background.

Radcliffe, meanwhile, undergoes a kind of character-ectomy. He starts the film as a cheerfully psychopathic bad guy who, yes, kidnaps Loretta, but then plies her with exotic cheeses to make it up to her. But somewhere in the movie’s long, drawn-out second half he morphs into a standard gun-waving villain, consumed by the lure of a priceless treasure.

Any flick starring either of these 2 … … gets a D.
