Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne says that playing a trans character in 'The Danish Girl' was a “mistake.”

Redmayne is currently starring alongside Jessie Buckley in a new production of “Cabaret” at London’s Playhouse Theatre. The actor plays The Emcee, or the Master of Ceremonies, a role that has been played several times by LGBTQ+ actors since it first premiered on Broadway in 1966.

“Of all the characters I’ve ever read, this one defies pigeonholing. I would ask people to come and see it before casting judgment,” Redmayne told The Sunday Times. The actor is also the lead of “Harry Potter” creator J.K. Rowling’s “Fantastic Beasts” franchise, the latest of which, “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” is due in 2022.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson will join filmmaker Chris Columbus and other cast members from all eight “Harry Potter” films for the first time in “Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts,” an HBO Max retrospective special to celebratecriticized for her anti-trans comments“As someone who has worked with both J.K. Rowling and members of the trans community, I wanted to make it absolutely clear where I stand,” Redmayne said in 2020 in a statement shared with Variety.

“I disagree with Jo’s comments. Trans women are women, trans men are men and non-binary identities are valid. I would never want to speak on behalf of the community but I do know that my dear transgender friends and colleagues are tired of this constant questioning of their identities, which all too often results in violence and abuse. They simply want to live their lives peacefully, and it’s time to let them do so.

Oh please 🙄 it was just a movie! Why be an actor to later come out saying stupid 💩

Was Annie really an orphan? Was Leo really Gatsby? Where will it end?

Wow. What a stupid reason to think it's a mistake. He knows he's an actor playing a roll in a movie, right?

Isn't he an actor? This would be his job.

It's all acting anyways, we've begun to normalize men pretending to be women. Thankfully science will always reinforce what constitutes what a real woman is. Men can't give birth, get pregnant, and have certain chromosomes.

Then Redmayne should quit acting.

Why? I thought it was acting.

This is like saying gay men shouldn’t play straight characters.

It was wrong to do so. A name actor means the film got attention and people in the seats. Let an unknown play the role and that wouldn't happen. In fact the film may never have been made. And will we now say gay men can't play straight roles? Let the best actor win.

No it's not. They literally race swap in Marvel and DC movies.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, actors should never act like someone else ever; not for any reason, no matter what, no matter where, or who, or who you are with, or where you are going, or where you've been., for any reason whatsoever...

It’s called acting. It’s literally his job

OK, that's an actor not an actress.

Are you sure he wasn’t talking about Jupiter Ascending?

Then by Eddie Redmayne's logic, was it also a mistake to play Stephen Hawking? Playing someone with ALS (Lou Gehrig Disease), when there might already be an actor with ALS?

Like a week ago.

Let trannys play trannys

Are you shitting me whytakearolejusttocomplainaboutit

Oh here we go.

It was also a mistake giving him an oscar instead of Michael Keaton in 'Birdman'

Isn’t the whole idea of acting to portray someone you’re not?

I thought it was called acting for a reason.

Hello Iam saleem from syria I have two kids I live with my family in a camp near turkish border We need help to get some basic needs Can you help us or know anyone can help

Whhhhhyyyy? It's called 'acting,' not, 'being yourself.' 🤦‍♂️

So we should have real mass murderers play murderers too? It's called ACTING!

Who ?

Paul Rudd says that playing an ant in Ant-Man was a mistake..

He wore trans-face.

No, it wasnt, he was mesmerising

🎉....
