It was Melbourne's own Berti-mania as television personalities Bert Newton and Patti McGrath tied the knot in Camberwell on November 9, 1974.

Police had to hold the crowd back as the bridal party's car edged its way to the steps of the St Dominic’s Church.In a symbol of their union, the lace on Bert's shirt matched the lace on Patti's dress.Patti first met Bert on a radio talent show when he was 12 — just a few years before he became Australia's youngest professional broadcaster at age 15.

Bert was briefly engaged to fellow TV star Susan-Gaye Anderson in 1962, and had an on-and-off-again relationship with model Joy Fountain.Patti and Bert Newton during their time on In Mebourne Tonight. "Eventually we met on the deck. It was all very romantic as we ran towards each other. I kept saying: 'I can't believe you're really here'."'It's been a wonderful life together'

It wasn't just the newlyweds fans were hoping to sneak a peak of — Bert's best man Graham Kennedy was a drawcard in his own right as one of the biggest names in television at the time. Together the couple endured both Bert's career in show business as well as his struggles with gambling addiction, which almost bankrupted them in 1993.
