Bert Newton, the colourful mainstay of Australian television who graced the nation's screens for more than 50 years, has died aged 83.

Born on July 23, 1938, in the then-working class Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy North, a young Bert Newton aspired to be a tram driver. The pair arguably pioneered live sketch comedy in Australia and were some of the country's biggest stars of the 60s.But it was their time together on the Graham Kennedy Show that cemented the pair's legacy in television.

"He stood up for me, because a couple of the people at Nine said, 'He's quite a good bloke, but he's so identified with the Kennedy era, grab somebody else.'It was Lane who anointed Newton with the title "Moonface" — a nickname he had also been called at school. "He's got to know what he's going to do and he's also got to know what possibly we have to search for too and make sure that they're coming out OK."The Don Lane Show wrapped in 1983, and while Lane's career took him to the US, Newton went on to become an Australian icon.On the 10th anniversary of Lane's death, Newton described him as his "TV bestie"

Newton was briefly engaged to fellow TV star Susan-Gaye Anderson in 1962, and had an on-and-off-again relationship with model Joy Fountain.Newton realised McGrath was "the One" while she was working overseas, so he flew to America and booked a ticket to the cruise ship she was performing on."It was all very romantic as we ran towards each other.

"He never stopped. Shows failed, there were sometimes disasters, but he just shrugged it off and kept going," biographerNewton briefly hosted his own show on the ABC in the 1970s, but it was at Channel 10 where he would find his new home as host of Good Morning Australia.

kelseyrettino 😔♥️

Proud Melburnian, Victorian and Australian icon. Will be missed. The era ends.

😔

That’s so sad. Poor Bert. 🕯

“Gold Logie-winning” would be his least impressive achievement

RIP Bert. 🙏

Hi , sorry to post this here, but I don't know a faster method to contact you at this hour. This article contains a mistake. It mentions that Graham Kennedy died in 2013, when he died in 2005. Probably not a good thing to confuse. I'm sorry to hear about Burt Newton.

He gave me a reason to love his voice and admire his Family Feud, when it came to watching the past YouTube clips. His reaction, to one of the craziest answers given away on that show, was completely priceless.

RIP Burt. You were one of the greats.

He was an icon and pioneer of live Australian TV and the funniest ad lib guy going around. It's really sad news. One of my all time favourite entertainers.

No not Bert 💔💔😢😢😭

Sadness

Really sad from Japan.. RIP

Bert, no surprise you're one letter off BEST! Just an amazing person and 1 of a kind.

Vale Bert. Thanks for the laughs.

The Don Lane Show, classic entertainment. RIP Bert.

This is very sad news. RIPBertNewton

Sad … was a genuinely funny guy. Unlike the modern imposters. Mostly on ABC

RiP. You will be missed

I'm so sorry to hear this. Bert was the ONLY person who could interview properly on Australian TV.

It's a good age to pass away. I guess they got to fit the angel on the head of a needle;) I'll be honest. I think people expect to live too long. It really turns sour for everybody after the age of 80. People have too much baggage and it's a slow death for all. Good Luck!

Good innings for Bert.

I interviewed Bert Newton once, we shook hands and he started laughing. He didn't have his wig on and saw I didn't know he wore one. He said 'is there a TAB near?', so we walked over to the TAB for him to 'do a bit of biz'. Disarming, great man, genuine article, feel really sad.

Thanks you Bert for your many, many hours of fun & entertainment over a lifetime on Australian Television. Our thoughts with Patty & family. Now time to rest. A great Australian. With sadness we say goodbye.

😔
